Reflect on the following questions and answer them in some detail.
1. Which of the possible venues do you think would best suit this play? Why do you believe the dramatic action would be best served in this venue?
I believe the best possible venue for this play would be an arena venue. With this venue, I think the dramatic action will be best served since this venue can provide a sense of intimacy with the actors. It also can provide some distance, especially since this play can be uncomfortable. This type of venue would find the fine balance so it can engage yet distance the audience. I think this would be able to capture the essence of Li'l Bit and Peck's relationship.
2. What are some of the design challenges posed by the play?
Some of the design challenges may be that the audience facing the back of the characters would not be able to absorb the play as well. For this particular play, I feel that you must see the play from the front in order to pick up any subtleties of the play especially since the play is based off subtle seduction.
3. Choose the various chorus characters and discuss how you see them dressed. In what ways do you think the costumes you describe would help articulate their purpose in this play?
I think the female chorus would wear something modest especially since the women depicted through the chorus are not seen to be as objectified as Li'l Bit is in the play. The female chorus would probably wear something long and "proper" to show what a "normal" lady should be like,
To me, the male chorus would wear something something rough. The grandfather seems very gruff to me, so something dark and unwelcoming seems fitting to show callousness.
The teenage chorus would wear something in pastel and delicate. In my mind, I think it could show how innocent the teenage chorus really is since the younger Li'l Bit does not know much and is quite oblivious.
4. Provide some ideas about the use of light in the play?
In my opinion, I strongly believe that there should be more light as Lil Bit starts to realize how wrong her relationship with Peck is. In a way, it would serve to be a visual pun since it will dawn upon her that the relationship is wrong. Light can be symbolic of knowledge, so the more she knows about the misdeed of the relationship, the brighter the play should be.
5. Suggest music and sound effects that could help accentuate the mood or atmosphere of the play.
This is a very sensual and deliberately uncomfortable play, so I think tense and possibly suggestive music could help capture the mood of the play. I believe the play would be better if the music was also instrumental and consisted of cello music since cellos have a dark enough tone to help portray the play.
